A Young Male Requires Counseling For His Intense Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Drug Addiction And Alcoholism

Roughly three months ago I had lunch with a forty-five-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship problems, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As explained by Benjamin, it is his drug addiction and alcoholism and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship difficulties.

As stated by Benjamin, he is so overcome by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he basically has little or no desire to accomplish much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete one semester of grad school in Spanish literature.

Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an illustration of an individual who can look in the mirror and perceive his drinking problems and substance abuse and do something constructive about these problems. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets drug and alcohol rehabilitation that results in lasting recovery.

It may be asked how therapy would help his drug and alcohol addiction. For starters, there are quite a few newly created physician-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through the alcohol and drug detoxification process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is completely nothing helpful about drug abuse and excessive and abusive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy situations is the map to deteriorating health, a premature death, shattered relationships, financial difficulties, poor work and school performance, and legal problems. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him cope with these medical problems more effectively and possibly create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in counseling he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Since Benjamin lacks the resolve to accomplish much of anything in his life, it is evident that he definitely needs a little hope for a healthier life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he needs for his severe depression and alcohol addiction and drug dependence and remain in his treatment program.

Benjamin is simply too young to be crushed in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs via alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the treatment he needs for his acute depression, he can turn his life around and start living with direction, self-respect, and passion.

Better relationships, a wonderful life, self respect, and beneficial change are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to obtain the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in an addiction-free and healthy manner, and learn how to foster a more positive attitude about life.
