A Young Gentleman's Irresponsible And Excessive Drinking Results In A DUI And Time Locked Up In Jail
Richard had a particularly difficult time keeping a job. In fact, due to his lethargy and lack of drive, he was without a job far more frequently than he was gainfully employed. And when he did find a job, he had a particularly difficult time getting to work in a timely manner, he usually received less than positive performance assessments, and he called off sick so often that he usually got fired a few weeks after he started working.
To no one's amazement, one of the results of Richard's less than great employment history was the fact that he was almost totally broke almost everyday. In spite of Richard's less than passing work record and financial negligence, on the other hand, in some way he managed to drink in an irresponsible and hazardous manner almost everyday.
So it came as no big surprise when Richard received a third DWI. When he went before the court, the judge stated to Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was irresponsible and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to serve nine months behind bars.
During his time in the county jail, Richard was expected to learn more about alcohol facts such as alcohol related consequence and alcohol deaths, about the unhealthy effects of excessive and abusive drinking, and he was required to get alcohol counseling. The judge stressed the fact that unless Richard gets professional alcohol counseling and learns how to live a life of sobriety, he will most probably be spending quite a bit of his time in jail.
Richard stated that he comprehended what the magistrate was asserting but he still believed that placement in the county jail was not the best decision. The judge disagreed and proclaimed that it was his obligation to keep alcohol dependent persons off the streets who drink and drive and who receive multiple DUIs. To validate this view, the magistrate listed some venerable, highly researched alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that highlighted some of the harmful consequences that are correlated with excessive and abusive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.
Even though Richard realized that he drank in an abusive and excessive manner, he never believed that he was an alcohol addicted person. So it was a big surprise when Richard began having chronic alcoholism symptoms and alcohol withdrawals about two hours after getting locked up in jail.
To monitor his alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a harm free manner, Richard was transferred to a rehab center for alcohol detox and then brought back to the county jail. While in jail Richard received alcohol rehabilitation but due to the fact that he received this rehab as something that was forced upon him, he failed to take ownership of his excessive drinking.
When his time behind bars was completed, the judge without indecision told Richard that he would be under stringent scrutiny and would be required to take random blood alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard failed to take ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he unwillingly followed the treatment protocol while in the local jail, the magistrate knew that it was essentially a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his excessive and abusive drinking behavior.
As the judge reflected on Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some people never "connect the dots" and learn how to live in an effective and accountable manner.
