A Woman Exhibits Signs Of Alcohol Dependency And Depression And Schedules An Appointment To See Her Doctor

Cindy was a thirty-two-year-old accounts payable manager who realized that she had a drinking problem. For instance, within the past month she has felt the need to have one or two drinks before going to work, three weeks ago she failed a random urine alcohol test at her place of employment, five weeks ago she got arrested for "driving under the influence", and lastly, for around three months she has started to forget what she says and does when she drinks with her pals.

Like other drinkers, Cindy's alcohol involvement started out slowly and continued at this level for quite some time due to the fact that every so often she engaged in casual social drinking. In reality, for around two years, every time she went out to drink, she made sure to drink in moderation. Something about her drinking activities, however, seemed to thoroughly change when her husband divorced her.

Cindy got extremely down in the dumps about the breakup with her husband, and as a way to stop dwelling on her depressing feelings she decided to start hanging around more frequently with some of her buddies who love to party. It didn't take long, however, before her drinking increased substantially the more often she went to and drank at family get-togethers, dinner dates, sporting events, happy hours, and private parties with her buddies.

In short, she was having a blast drinking just like everyone else in her group of friends without giving too much thought to the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been experiencing. Yet in the recesses of her mind she knew about the adverse alcohol effects on the body and on the brain and that she more likely than not needed alcohol treatment but sidestepped the thought as much as possible.

One day during her annual physical exam, her healthcare practitioner asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to lie to her doctor, Cindy admitted that she frequently drinks more than she should. In reality, she stated that she frequently drinks in an excessive manner. Then Cindy told her healthcare practitioner about her depression. More precisely, she mentioned that broken relationships usually set off a depressing cycle of events typified by increased drinking which further led to more dismal feelings that, in turn, led to more drinking. And this is exactly what happened when she and her husband got divorced four years ago.

Cindy's doctor then told her the following: "I am not trying to make a sudden analysis, but with your medical situation we may be dealing with two separate issues. As a result, I think we need to make an appointment for you to get an alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction evaluation from my partner, Dr. Gardner, who is an alcohol abuse and substance abuse specialist."

"Whether your drinking circumstance is more related to alcohol abuse or alcoholism is not clear, but I think that further exploration is justifiable. Then I think we need to schedule an appointment for you to get a psychological exam from another one of my partners, Dr. Carlson, who is a psychologist."

"I want to get a better grip on your sadness and see how much your drinking and depression are interrelated." Cindy showed her agreement with her doctor's plan of attack and thanked him for his help.
