A Health Instructor Teaches Her Pupils About The Significance Of Alcoholism Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest parochial high school in the state. Even though she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already secured a reputation as a teacher with a teaching methodology that encouraged and stimulated students to think and to learn.

For example, one Wednesday morning at 10:00 she addressed the pupils in her classroom and stated the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more broad-based point of view and we are also going to learn about several of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed point of view."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will undeniably reveal that an individual with a drinking problem is a person who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a person manifests, the greater the probability that he or she is an individual who is alcohol dependent."

Miss Jackson then explained to the members in the class that each pupil would be held responsible for investigating two alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the class via a ten minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to go over the list and rank the top five alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After about twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and told her students that after she assesses the numbers, she will present her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked the pupils in her class to go over the information on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within a minute or two, virtually every pupil in the class raised his or her hand. It was clear to see that the pupils had some issues, concerns, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For instance, almost every person in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, that is to say, "Do you feel exceptionally sick when you refrain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then informed the students in her class why this answer was the most clear-cut indicator of alcohol dependency. She pointed out that the main difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

Primarily this means that when a person who is alcohol dependent suddenly stops drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcoholic, the pupils started to recognize the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson realized that she had inspired and stimulated the pupils in her classroom to stop and think about a significant health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
