A Compassionate Manager Helps An Employee Address His Excessive And Irresponsible Drinking After A Destroyed Relationship

Barry got expelled from high school when he was fifteen years old and eventually got a job at a local chemical plant. For the last six years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working and conscientious person who hardly ever takes off from work due to illness.

Approximately three months ago he started going out with a young lady named Carol. They appeared to hit it off immediately and looked as if they had a lot of fun together.

When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This totally changed when they started seeing one another on a fairly regular basis. If truth be told, everything was going fine until Carol out of the blue called Barry one night around 2 AM and said that she had to call off their relationship and that she couldn't explain the reason at that moment.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to Carol's apartment and immediately discovered that she had already moved out. Barry took this very hard. In actual fact, he was astounded because they appeared to be getting along so very well.

So what did Barry do about Carol's leaving? Instead of working through his suffering and pain, he began getting drunk almost every night. It didn't take long for his coworkers and for his boss to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least twice per week and that he routinely called off sick. What is more, some of the workers made an appointment with staff in Human Resources and mentioned that Barry routinely came to work with a noticeable smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.

Barry's manager heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Tuesday morning he called Barry into his office. He told Barry that he had recently noticed an explicit change in his behavior, attendance, sick time, and in his work performance.

"Barry, I am not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that conversant with alcoholism facts, but I have seen many of my friends and relatives experience some really bad problems due to their abusive and excessive drinking. My suggestion is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse can do to a person."

"Why is this important? When individuals involve themselves in abusive drinking, their drinking problems not only negatively affect the drinker, but they also negatively impact his or her friends, family, relatives, neighbors, and co-workers. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your abusive and hazardous drinking from our employee's assistance program."

Barry respected his manager very much and as a result followed through with his suggestion the very next day when he called and scheduled an appointment with a psychologist in the employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't necessarily feel any better or less depressed about the loss of Carol, he felt comfort knowing that his supervisor and his fellow employees cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave Barry some psychological relief for the first time in several weeks and he honestly felt some hope that he would get his life back on track.
